Why book with a travel agency, rather than through the internet?
All Ontario based travel agencies are regulated by TICO (Travel Industry Council of Ontario). www.tico.ca
A travel agent is responsible to make sure you get what you pay for, and is bound to "truth in advertising". We are bound to complete disclosure (the whole truth) about travel products. Also, when you don't get what you paid for, we contact airlines and tour operators with claims on your behalf.
All agents working in a registered travel agency must fulfill educational requirements, be tested, and registered. Therefore, when you buy from a registered travel agency, you get your travel advice from competent, and educated agents.
All Ontario based travel agencies make bi-annual contributions to the Travel Industry Compensation Fund. This compensation fund protects consumers in the event of an airline, or cruise line end-supplier failure. The compensation fund is a protection for consumers in the event that an airline, travel agent, or cruise line fails to provide the services paid for. When booking through the internet, the compensation fund does not apply.
When booking through the internet you take responsibility for the booking process, for the quality of accomodation, etc. When dissatisfied, claims can be more difficult. When an airline goes bankrupt while you're on vacation, you take responsibility to complete your trip where the Compensation Fund could have bailed you out had you booked with a registered agency.
A travel agency can offer the consumer any deal which can be found on the internet. However, the internet doesn't discriminate, and prices often don't reflect the consumer's expected value. This is because there is no experienced advice during the booking process. Therefore, even when searching on-line, seek the advice of a professional travel consultant for your own benefit and satisfaction.
For the protection of the consumer, all travel agencies must be registered with TICO, and must post security to show financial responsibility. Also, trust accounting is implemented to secure prompt payment on behalf of the client. Also, should a travel agency go bankrupt, the client's funds can be returned.
Anyone buying from an Ontario registered travel agency is protected by the fund whether they live in Ontario or not.
